We too busy in our lives and oftentimes neglect to give our canine family members the attention they need. Just a little act of regular grooming has far-reaching health benefits: you remove the dead hair that helps the skin breathe, you check for tick and other insects, check the skin for rashes or other issues. And lest we forget about such thing as bonding. Which happens automaticaly if only we don't forget to set aside some time that we are going to spend with the dog.

I would use a reward and punishment system with your puppy. When he goes in the house let him know that it is bad and then take him outside. When he goes outside give him a reward so he will begin to understand what is right and what is wrong.

It sounds as though your pup thinks you are playing with him when you try to herd him onto the paper.
Yes, dogs like to go toilet where their own scent is - so if you're going to paper-train him, make sure that some of the paper has his urine scent on it. And you're going to have to physically exclude him from the areas of carpet that contain his urine-scent - disinfectants will help replace his smell, but they're not quick. A partial solution is to cover each old piddle-spot with about 4 layers of newspaper as soon as your cleaning has dried, thereby accomplishing 2 desirable goals: he goes on the paper, the carpet isn't affected.

Maybe you live somewhere that I'd refuse to (I believe that snow belongs on the mountains inland from me, NOT on the ground where I'm living; I was 9 before I saw a frozen puddle), but the proper method of house-training is to start with a naturally-clean pup that has been raised outdoors, to learn its pre-piddle anxiety signal and be ready - almost exactly 1 minute after it wakes up and 3 minutes after a meal - to pick it up and carry it to the designated toilet area, then stay there but ignore it until it does piddle or poo, then make a fuss of it before letting it follow you back inside.
If you foolishly chose to obtain a puppy while the ground was buried under snowdrifts you must just shiver out there while he switches from "excited-exploration" mode to "bladder-emptying" mode.

Do NOT say "toilet" to him while waiting - he doesn't speak English, and has not yet learned the word as a command. Don't say ANYTHING to him while you're waiting - it will just distract him. During the training stage you use the word (WITH praise - e.g., "Good boy toilet!") the INSTANT he finishes, maybe even just before you think he's ready to finish, so that he gradually associates the word with his elimination and you being pleased with him for eliminating there, not with being outside to play, not with being outside to be growled at, not with you trying to herd him into a corner for some mysterious reason.

A couple of the prime rules of training are that you never issue a command that you can't enforce, and you don't issue commands AS COMMANDS until you are sure the pup has learned to associate the sound & gesture with a particular action or object. A third relates to timing - rewards & reprimands must be INSTANT while the behaviour is still happening or at least before anything else has had time to happen and attract the pup's attention.

You need to THINK from the dog's point of view.
• YOU thought "i locked him in there on the paper believing he would soon go on the paper".
• HE thought "Help - the great pack leader has abandoned me! How do I get back with her?"
Unless you are IN there with him ready to praise at the right moment, how is he to know that he's done the right thing when he piddles/poos? - and how are YOU to know when he's finished?

"Soul T":
Are you trying to convince me that I have been killing my pups for the last 40 years? Won't work, you know! Apart from the pup that got born beside me while I was clipping the hedge, all my pups have been born on newspaper. The whelping box that confines them until they are strong enough to climb over the 30cm/12" side is lined with newspaper; when they escape they escape onto newspaper; when they have turns inside, my study is lined with newspaper in case one manages to start piddling while I am working. But in fine weather they have the run of the back of my section, until they get brave enough to fall off the edge of each terrace and come down to house level.
And yet some of my dogs have lived to 15. My current oldie is 13½ and, although stone deaf for a year, she looks likely to last another 14 months.
OLD newspaper has let the ink dry, and is cheap from the printer or the area distributor. The only problem is how to dispose of it - wet paper doesn't burn.
I hate to think how long you have left old wet newspaper on the floor, if it had time to stain the floor! But even so, a sheet of gardening plastic underneath would solve that problem.

First, I would hang a bell on the door that you want the puppy to go out of. Secondly everytime that you take the puppy out of that door you take its paw and tap the bell. The bell must be placed low enough for the puppy to tap it on its own. I have a small fenced in area (which you can buy or make) outside of the door where I put the puppy in. I woudl take a piece of his droppings and place it in the area. Take the puppy out 15 minutes to a half hour after it eats. After he does his duties, give the puppy a treat, if he does not, do not give him a treat. The puppy will get used to hitting the bell and you will love it.

Do some research, you've got tons to learn about being a responsible pet owner. How the heck would you like it being tossed in a room and the door locked and you being stuck in there not knowing what's going on or why you're all alone in there. Positive reinforcement, love and praise goes a long long way. Personaly, I think you need to re-home the dog and perhaps get a pet rock.

When i got my pupy it was always good to be home alot. From what you said it looks like you are so thats good. What we did is we took some string and tied a jingle bell to it. Every time you decide to take him outside ring the bell. Pretty soon your puppy should catch on and ring the bell when he wants to go out side. It works great and my puppy learned it really fast. Hope this helps!!! :)

Don't train him to pee in the house. Train him to pee outside. Crate train him, take him out often and praise him when he goes outside.

You really should of researched having a puppy before you got one. It can take months to have a puppy potty trained. At 8 weeks old he has no clue what you expect of him. He is not running to your carpet intentionally and peeing. The easiest way to potty train is a very strict schedule. You take the puppy outside at the same times everyday. The general rule is as soon as he wakes up, 30 minutes after he eats and 15 minutes after he drinks water. An 8 week puppy should be let out every hour and praised when he he goes. If you punish that puppy now you are going to make him afraid of you and people since he has no idea what he is doing. In the beginning you are more trained than the pup. You need to watch every move he makes and learn is actions before he pees to get him outside. If you cannot watch him put him in a crate.

With our puppy we really worked at it. We'd ask take him outside and before we went out we'd say "you gotta go out to go potty??" And then take him out. When he'd be going potty we'd tell him "good boy!!!" WHILE he was going potty. If he went inside we cleaned up the "potty" with paper towels and used odorban on the area that he pottied on. We took the paper towels outside where we wanted him to potty. To put his scent outside. We just kept doing that. If we CAUGHT him going potty inside we'd yell NO!!! And take him outside immediately and tell him to go outside. After a short time he figured it out.
